Grand Hotel
Puigpunyent (Mallorca), Spain

A private vineyard, organic orchards and lush gardens: surrounded by abundant nature, Son Net allows the aesthetics of the 17th century to flourish once again inside.

The location

Perched on stone terraces and lined with tall palm trees, the hotel is located in the heart of Mallorca’s countryside, yet only 20 minutes from Palma. While one can enjoy the peaceful location, destinations on the coast or in the capital can be reached quickly.

Backstory

The Son Net was converted into a hotel in 1998. Its private vineyard, lush gardens and opulent suites attracted numerous prominent guests from all over the world to the island. Among them were European royal families, heads of state, icons from the world of music and literature, and award-winning actresses, actors, producers and directors. Since its opening the hotel has received numerous prestigious awards.

Interior & architecture

This Mallorcan mansion, decorated with works of art, dates back to the 17th century. A spring water fountain, a private chapel and the original courtyard are just some of the highlights of the house.

Interior designer Lorenzo Castillo was brought in to highlight the original features of the manor house. Under his guidance, carved wooden ceilings, antique fireplaces, mosaic floors and rustic beams were carefully restored and all areas of the hotel were individually designed.

The garden

Nothing is left to chance. The lawns and flower beds are immaculately maintained, and the organic orchards are bursting with fruit. Large trees called Celtis australis, ‘Almez’—trees of decisions—characterise the main entrance to Son Net.

It was here that people used to meet back in 1672, when the palace was built. The original character of the garden was preserved and only supplemented by new landscaping areas with native Mediterranean plants.

A look inside

The architectural heritage of the palace is particularly evident in the Grand Suite Maria de Napoles, with its beams in the living room and the arches and stone columns separating the dressing room from the bedroom.

One of the most beautiful areas of the hotel is the front terrace of the Grand Suite Jaime III. Located on the first floor of the entrance façade, it offers a sweeping view of Mount Galatzó from its 70 m² of space.

Each room in the hotel has been designed with a unique personality and charm. Not far from the main palace lie the Pool Cottage Suites and the Pool Cottage House.

Cuisine

At Mar & Duix, one can indulge in authentic Mallorcan haute cuisine prepared with local and homemade products, as well as vegetables from the hotel’s own garden. In spring and summer, the Gazebo restaurant by the pool with its open-air kitchen invites guests to relish the mild days of the year and the view of the Puigpunyent valley.

For light snacks and refreshing drinks, the Green Bar offers a selection of snacks and tapas as well as classic bar dishes. In a cosy lounge with a fireplace and on the spacious terrace, guests can let their gaze wander and savour an impressive selection of wines and cocktails.

Son Net has been producing its own wine since 2007 in collaboration with a renowned Mallorcan winery. One year earlier, a vineyard covering almost one hectare was planted especially for this purpose. The wine finds its way into the estate’s restaurants and bars. Guided by an expert who explains the wine’s origins and rich flavour, guests can explore the vineyards before sampling the wine under the shade of the pavilion.

Spa & Wellness

A thermal area with sauna, Turkish bath, Japanese pool and ice fountain, five treatment rooms and a heated indoor pool with sea salt offers plenty of space to relax spread across more than 1,000 m².

For those who prefer to relax through exercise, the fitness room offers the latest Technogym equipment and magnificent views of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. Yoga classes and private personal trainer sessions are also available on request. Members and non-hotel guests are also welcome here.

Surrounding area

The mountain village of Puigpunyent, with its narrow streets and stone houses, has a picturesque charm. Surrounded by rolling hills and valleys, it lies in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains in western Mallorca. The capital city of Palma is only 16 km away. Son Net is therefore well connected yet quietly located.

Interesting spots

Hiking: Trails of varying degrees of difficulty wind their way past villages with traditional stone houses. Deià, Valldemossa and Sóller are particularly impressive.

Puig de Galatzó is one of the best viewpoints on the island. The 1,027-metre-high, pyramid-shaped peak is part of the Tramontana mountain range, which nestles against Son Net. It offers magnificent views of villages, nature and the sea, as well as other mountains such as Mola del Ram, Mola de Planícia, Moleta Rassa and Mola del Port d’Andratx.

A trip to the village of Galilea not only offers great sea views, but also houses an impressive 18th-century church, the Assumption of the Virgin.

Cycling: With Son Net’s own fleet of bicycles, the island can also be explored comfortably on two wheels: routes for beginners and experienced cyclists will put their endurance to the test.

Sea & beaches: With privileged access to some of the island’s most turquoise waters and white sandy coves, one can experience Mallorca from a different angle. Whether on a sailing boat or on the coast, watching the Mediterranean sun set is always worth a visit.

Limestone mountains and sheltered bays with Roman and Moorish ruins adorn the coastline. There are 260 beaches stretching along almost 50 kilometres of coastline, each with its own unique character: from pebble coves to long sandy beaches, from pine trees to mountains—but always framed by calm, clear, turquoise waters.

Palma: When strolling through the old town, one can indulge oneself in the rich culture of Mallorca’s capital. Museums, festivals, galleries, exhibitions and monuments such as Gothic cathedrals or Bellver Castle line the streets.
