The Importance of Being Earnest, Wilde’s most famous comedy, served as inspiration for combining the creative atmosphere of Victorian London with modernity in the fully renovated Townhouse Suite—realised by renowned London design studio Tully Filmer.
The location
The Half Moon Street, where the boutique hotel is located, was developed in 1730. It was named after the Half Moon pub, which once stood on the corner of Piccadilly on the east side of the street. Although the address is now considered one of London’s wealthiest districts, it was once a much more colourful and bohemian place. Back in the 1880s, it was a popular meeting place for young, cultivated gentlemen.
Among them was Oscar Wilde, who regularly visited the hotel’s tavern at the time. And especially affluent men rented their bachelor flats here—many of them writers and poets too, such as William Hazlit, Wilfred Edward Salter Owen, Henry James, but also Frances Burney. The hotel is located in the heart of Mayfair, just a short walk from Buckingham Palace and Bond Street and has excellent transport links.
The back story
As one of the oldest establishments of its kind in London, the five-star Flemings Mayfair Hotel was originally founded in 1851 by Robert Fleming. The occasion was the Great Exhibition, which attracted over six million visitors to London who required overnight accommodation.
Over the years, Flemings Mayfair has expanded and now welcomes guests from all over the world. Especially culture and art lovers, gourmets and sophisticated travellers will find a real gem here. It was voted one of the top 5 best hotels in London at the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2025 and is a member of the renowned Small Luxury Hotels of the World association. Today, the hotel is managed by Managing Director Henrik Muehle.
Interior & architecture
As soon as guests enter the lobby, their eyes are drawn to the first well-placed splash of colour: an arrangement of fiery red flowers adorning the entrance area. With great attention to detail and high-quality materials, Flemings Mayfair creates a cosy, lightly dimmed atmosphere. All rooms seem to be bathed in warm white light.
Art Deco lamps and furnishings, combined with bohemian wallpapers, paintings and flowers. The interior of the hotels exudes the charm of bygone times, but still has a modern touch. Whether with simple wallpaper, plain panelling or opulent patterns, every room has its own charm.
A look inside
Thirteen townhouses dating from 1734 with 129 luxurious guest rooms and suites belong to Flemings Mayfair, yet still offer plenty of privacy. And, of course, excellent service.
Through the redesign of the luxurious three-room townhouse suite, the hotel sought to honour the legacy of Oscar Wilde: a space that captures the spirit of the past while embracing contemporary elegance. Wilde’s sharp wit and the bohemian character of the neighbourhood are reflected in the vibrant colours and opulent fabrics.
He recorded his impressions of the area in his work ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, which served as a source of inspiration for the newly designed Townhouse Suite. Here, guests can immerse themselves in his world and spend their evenings reading a copy provided by the hotel. Book lovers can browse a bookcase filled with selected treasures from Cologne-based cult publisher TASCHEN, with whom Flemings Mayfair has an exclusive partnership.
Cuisine
Those residing in London cannot skip a cup of traditional afternoon tea, which guests can sip in The Drawing Room. Sophisticated drinks await in the glamorous 1930s ambience of the intimate Manetta’s Bar.
Considered one of London’s finest restaurants, the Michelin-starred Ormer Mayfair encourages guests to take their time and savour every aspect of their culinary journey. Executive chef Sofian Msetfi and his team offer a simple yet inspiring dining experience infused with creativity and originality.

What we love about it?
What makes Fleming’s Mayfair so special to us is that it cleverly incorporates the history of the building itself and the neighbourhood, treating it as the very heart of the premises. Here, one truly feels as though one is breathing in some of the spirit of the writers and poets of that era.
