The
Yellow
House

Holiday home
near Monchique, Portugal

Located on stone terraces and surrounded by abundant nature, the Yellow House offers ample space for families and groups of friends. Three single houses spread across the rocky slope allow for gatherings and relaxation.

The view

Straight from the living room into the water: the spacious terrace with its former irrigation tank offers a beautiful view of the surrounding vineyards. A second terrace next to the kitchen serves as a place for dinner and homemade barbecue dishes or pizza. Citrus trees and a small herb garden in the nearby orchard add to the charm of the place.

The architecture

High ceilings and a modern wood-burning stove: The Yellow House combines minimalism with comfort and cosy elements. The focus lies on reduced shapes and colours througout the houses. In addition, environmentally friendly underfloor heating, which is powered by electric heat pumps, keeps the houses pleasantly warm.

A look inside

The Yellow House consists of three separate buildings: the main house and two separate suites. While the main house has a master bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen, the suites each have their own facilities, including a toilet and shower. As the buildings are separate from each other, groups who like to travel together can also retreat occasionally.

Reduced but carefully selected furnishings characterise the interior: in the centre of the spacious living room stands a striking yellow vintage sofa called ‘Strips’, designed by renowned Italian architect Cini Boeri and manufactured by Arflex. An original Elle55 floor lamp by Tommaso Cimini completes the interior.

A custom-made oak bathtub offers secluded relaxation. And environmentally friendly shower gels and shampoos from the local Algarve brand 8950 Cosmetica can be found in the bathrooms.

Surrounding area

In the midst of nature and mountains, the Yellow House is the ideal starting point for hiking—whether to nearby Picota Mountain or Fóia, both offer sweeping views over the valleys and mountain bike trails. Both photography enthusiasts and birdwatchers will find plenty to enjoy on the highest peaks of Serra de Monchique.

Interesting spots

Several supermarkets, cafés and restaurants can be found in the nearby small town of Monchique with its charming, cobblestone streets. Locally produced pottery and woven goods are also sold here. Close to the town is a forest with typical Portuguese cork trees.

Known for its golden sand and dramatic cliffs, Praia da Rocha, the closest beach on the southern Algarve coast, is only 35 minutes away. Another beach with dunes and calm waters is Praia de Alvor, around 40 minutes away. More rugged and natural beaches like Praia da Arrifana or Praia do Amado await on Costa Vicentina—offering perfect conditions for surfing.

What we love about it?

The well-thought-out colour scheme and the implementation of selected rustic elements. Yellow, light grey and black dominate the interiors of all the houses. The warm colours of the wood and yellow upholstery are balanced by muted plaster and dark furniture, which highlight them even more.

Who is this place best suited for?

For families with teenagers and groups of adults. The three separate and unconnected buildings of the Yellow House offer plenty of space to retreat to—and just as much space to spend time together.
