Lounge chairs with green umbrellas surround a pool, casting shadows on a brick patio at Parkhotel Mondschein.

Parkhotel
Mondschein

Hotel
Bolzano, Italy

When one arrives at the Parkhotel Mondschein, the first thing that catches the eye is the ivy-covered façade with its Art Nouveau balconies and white shutters. But its interior is no less impressive.

The location

Located in the city’s oldest arcade streets, Parkhotel Mondschein is surrounded by a large park, just a few minutes’ walk from Bolzano railway station. Mountains and hills rise on the horizon, while museums, shops and restaurants line the street. It’s only a 10-minute drive to the airport.

Backstory

There was a time when nobles, artists, farmers, resistance fighters and travellers from near and far used to stay here. At that time, it was the first inn in the town. The oldest part of the building dates back to 1320. Then as now, the hotel is an important part of Bolzano.

Brothers Klaus and Moritz Dissertori opened their fourth hotel in South Tyrol with the Parkhotel Mondschein. Their other three hotels are the 1477 Reichhalter, Villa Arnica and Schwarzschmied in Lana.

Architecture & interior

The family-run hotel was extended in 1860 in the Belle Époque style: wide terrazzo corridors, high ceilings and magnificent floors now grace the interior. The lift and lobby bear witness to modernisation measures carried out in the 1950s and 1960s.

The distinctive style of interior designer Christina Biasi-von Berg, who was also responsible for the interior design of the three other buildings, runs throughout the hotel, although she took care to preserve the history of the building. She subtly combines the three different eras of the building.

While the rooms and suites differ, they all share the same colour scheme. In addition to original details, the hotel also features many new pieces of furniture designed by her office. Delicate pink stools in the Luna Bar, for example.

Artworks by Fernández Arcas and Karla Hiraldo Voleau adorn the walls. The hotel invited them to spend a summer as artists in residence at the Parkhotel. Inspired by the rooms, they created their works. To this day, artists regularly visit the hotel and provide new inspiration. One of them is Nicolas Polli from Switzerland, who combined everyday objects from the hotel with local products in his still life-like photographs, questioning consumer standards.

High ceilings with stucco decorations, dark real wood floorboards, crystal chandeliers and solid wood furniture adorn the 60 rooms and 16 suites. A glance outside reveals the spacious hotel park with sun loungers, rose garden and kiosk.

The garden, which resembles the size of a city park, is surprising. Here, guests can relax on cushioned teak beach chairs and in the outdoor area while enjoying a gin fizz or South Tyrolean wine.

Cuisine

In the morning, the hotel serves a rich breakfast buffet with cakes, pastries, bread, eggs, jams, juices and hot drinks such as coffee and tea from small local producers.

Right next to the Parkhotel Mondschein one will find the Luna restaurant, which is one of the oldest taverns in Bolzano. Original decorations adorn its ceilings. Classic Italian dishes and fine wines are served.

Here guests will find handmade pasta and other dishes with fresh fish from the Adriatic coast, high-quality meat from regional butchers, fresh vegetables and fruit.

These ingredients are transformed into delicious dishes by chef Mathieu Domagala, who also serves international classics. But not only hotel guests enjoy his cuisine, locals do as well.

In the afternoon and evening, the Luna Bar serves light snacks by the pool or in the garden. And with a Gin Basil Smash, homemade lemonade or a glass of South Tyrolean natural wine, guests can relax in the evening and enjoy the last rays of sunshine as the shadows in the park grow longer.

As part of its ‘À Table’ label, the hotel invites international guest chefs to prepare dinner in the bar or garden. And every Friday evening, DJs play their beats during ‘DJ’n’Drinks’. Fresh drinks ans small snacks can be found at the hotel’s small kiosk, which is located right next to the Luna Bar.

The tasty scent of fresh dough fills the air at Alto Pizza. At this restaurant, the focus is on simple yet tasty cuisine.

Delicious pizzas are baked here using flour from the region, water from the well, buffalo mozzarella from southern Italy, spicy salami from Naples, ham from South Tyrol and juicy tomatoes.

Wellness & Relaxation

At the hotel’s own Arise studio, relaxation comes first. From classes in a variety of yoga styles to monthly specials, cocoa ceremonies and sound baths, all of these are available to both hotel guests and locals from Bolzano.

The Arise studio is ideal for anyone who wants to continue their relaxation practice while on holiday, as well as newbies who want to try it out for the first time.

Lined with terracotta and tiled with dark green tiles, the pool offers the perfect refreshment on hot summer days.

With a pleasant water temperature of 30°C, the pool is open from March to October for a refreshing dip. Book lovers can relax on the comfortable sun loungers by the pool and let their gaze wander across the blue sky.

With training equipment from Nohrd and Rogue, such as treadmills and rowing machines, the fitness room can be used to exercise and improve endurance.

And afterwards, at a steamy 90°C in the sauna, switching off is made easy. From there, one can admire the view over the hotel garden.

Surrounding area

In Bolzano, in northern Italy, tourists can see the glacier mummy ‘Ötzi’, which is on display in the Archaeology Museum. Not far away is Maretsch Castle, which was built in the 13th century.

Activities

The Foto Forum in Via Weggenstein focuses solely on photography, promoting visual cultures from far and wide. Disruptive, expressive exhibitions of contemporary art can be seen at the Fondazione Antonio Dalle Nogare.

Several valleys meet in Bolzano, offering some of the most beautiful cycling tours in South Tyrol. With a day trip on a racing or mountain bike, cyclists can reach Lake Kaltern, the Montiggler Lakes, Eppan or Merano, the Ritten or several mountain passes. Guests can rent bicycles and e-bikes right at the hotel.

To admire the vista of the Dolomites from the Ritten mountain station, visitors can take one of three cable cars, which ascend the 950-metre difference in altitude within 12 minutes. From here, hikers can continue on to the Ritterhorn at 2,260 metres or to the earth pyramids.

Past palm trees, shady forests, lush green meadows and alpine pastures up to the mountain peaks: a multitude of hiking trails criss-cross the Bolzano landscape, offering varied tours at different altitudes.

For those who prefer to swing a golf club, six nearby golf courses offer a wide range of options for professionals and beginners alike.

A total of 26 ski resorts exist in South Tyrol. Rittner Horn, Carezza, Obereggen, Jochgrimm, Gröden, and Seiser Alm are particularly popular, due to their convenient proximity to the Dolomites and Bolzano, which can be easily reached by car.

Lake Caldaro, the Monticolo Lakes near Appiano and Lake Wolfsgrubner on the Renon plateau are located close to the Parkhotel Mondschein. With excellent water quality and beautiful surroundings, they offer a unique swimming experience.
