near Müncheberg, Germany

Amidst the trees of the Brandenburg countryside lies the former GDR building, now known as Palais Brut. Rapeseed fields and lakes characterize the landscape, a setting into which the vacation home blends harmoniously.

The view

On the quiet outskirts of Eggersdorf, the former prefabricated house from the 1990s offers unobstructed views of nature from its terraces. The small village, with only about 400 inhabitants, is located near Märkische Schweiz. Guests can enjoy the garden, which covers over 2,100 square metres and includes a large garden sauna.

The architecture

Radically redesigned yet still a testament to its era: the old WBS70 prefabricated building retained its striking exterior with concrete slabs and repeating patterns. The building fabric was preserved and reused as much as possible, while the building underwent a radical redesign: The former basement staircase now serves as a stairs to the first floor, cut-out concrete walls and ceiling sections were used for the terraces.

The double house, which had stood empty for a long time, was sensitively renovated and given a new lease of life by architect Hans Sasse and its owners. While on the outside, the exposed aggregate concrete was thoroughly cleaned and insulated, on the inside existing windows were enlarged and the basement insulated with compostable glass foam gravel. In addition all pipes and cables were renewed. A new gas condensing boiler, supported by solar thermal energy, warms water and floors.

A look inside

Two bright holiday apartments of different sizes—each with its own terrace and unobstructed view—can accommodate up to 10 guests when rented together. While one is perfect for couples, the other offers plenty of space for families with its three bedrooms. Both apartments have fully equipped kitchen and king-sized beds.

The furnishings include a mix of dressers, chairs, and items that had been stored in the owners’ basement for years, along with second-hand furniture, lighting, accessories, and reused building materials.

Surrounding area

The Palais Brut offers panoramic views over fields and a direct access to the organic farmland of the nearby Apfeltraum farming community. The close-by Dachsberg and Silberberg mountains are great for hikers, and wooded lakes like the Großer Tornowsee and Kleiner Tornowsee are perfect for those who love to swim. Other swimming lakes are easy to get to by bike.

Interesting spots

Only an hour away from the centre of Berlin, the holiday home is the perfect base for exploring the hilly Märkisch-Oderland region and several nearby swimming lakes. In Buckow, a Kneipp resort offers restaurants and cultural attractions, and just 30 minutes away in Bad Saarow, guests can enjoy the Saarow Therme spa.

What we love about it?

The reuse and preservation of existing building fabric and the fact that old furniture has been given a new home. Creating a modern, cosy home does not always require everything to be new—as the architect and owners demonstrate.

Who is this place best suited for?

From couples to families to large groups of friends. While the children can romp around in the garden, the kitchen invites guests to cook large meals and nature begs to be explored.
