Holiday apartments
Kissos (Crete), Greece

Perched on a hill, the cube-shaped apartments are surrounded by a rugged but lush landscape: Meraki Studios offers its guests a slower pace and a grounded way of life. A philosophy that is also reflected in the name: In the Greek language, Meraki describes the way of doing something with care, intention and passion.

Known to locals as Tsikalaria, the 6,500 square metre terraced plot was once home to a man who had a flair for plants. It was him who cultivated the cascading terraces—to honour this legacy, the founders began growing a vegetable garden from which guests are invited to harvest.

The view

From the terrace, the view sweeps over the tree-covered hills. Rugged mountains rise up all around the valley—a view characterised by undisturbed nature.

The architecture

Exposed concrete grids and locally sourced stones—the concept of Meraki Studios focuses on the environment. The grid, filled with stones known for their thermal properties, forms solid walls that offer protection from the Cretan sun. The exposed natural brickwork is designed to develop a natural patina and lichen over time, further blending the building into the landscape.

At its centre a 3D lattice skeleton is bedded in rigid concrete blending into the irregular contours of the landscape. Like an abstract mountain the stacked rocks of the apartment building rise from the ground.

A look inside

Divided into six differently-sized studios, the complex above the village of Kissos centres on essential comfort, simplicity and a deep connection to the land. A cascading landscape surrounding the dwellings provides both protection from the weather and light. Overhangs, shutters and pergolas are used to support the regulation of light, heat and airflow.

Each cubical is self-contained, ranging from approximately 20 to 40 square metres. All dwelling have their own entrance, a kitchenette and a shaded terrace with a view of the valley and mountains. The pared-back interior and furniture, designed by architect Sigurd Larsen, reflects the ethos of simplicity as luxury. After all, true luxury lies in the view, nature and a 12 x 5 metre infinity pool discreetly integrated into the existing stonework.

Surrounding area

Moss-covered gorges and mountain peaks bathed in Mediterranean light dominate the view. Tsikalaria is home to traditional agriculture including olive groves, fig and oak trees and open meadows. On the south coast beaches await, while nearby Rethymno and the Psiloritis National Park offer hiking trails.

Interesting spots

The village of Spili hosts a market on Fridays, showcasing local produce and giving guests the opportunity to immerse themselves even deeper in local life. Plenty of ingredients are offerd to prepare a home-cooked meal—served with a mountain view. In case some ingredients are missing, the nearby supermarket will solve the problem. In Rethymno long beaches and some architectural gems await, such as Moni Arkadiou, one of Crete’s national monuments.

What we love about it?

The consideration and embedding in nature through energy-efficient construction methods, inspired by local building traditions, natural materials and artisanship. Retaining walls that were once used for olive cultivation now serve as the basis for a flourishing organic garden. A nearby water reservoir created by the farmers served as inspiration for the 12 x 5 metre infinity pool.

And not to mention the small gestures: it happens that locally produced olive oil stands on the counter, ready to be mixed with vegetables—already waiting in the fridge. Accompanied by a handwritten menu with tips on how to prepare a Greek salad, just like the locals do. Starting the vaccation in true Cretan style.
