MOTTO

Boutique hotel
Vienna, Austria

Romance meets subtle elements of punk: in the dreamy, creative world of Hotel MOTTO, a new definition of luxury is emerging. With its extraordinary attitude, an extravagant universe has been created in the middle of Mariahilfer Straße. Floral patterns and greenery run throughout the romantic hotel—interrupted by small rebellious elements.

The location

Located on the corner of Mariahilfer Straße and Neubaugasse, Hotel MOTTO is surrounded by shops and cafés. From here, guests can step right into Viennese life and quickly reach other parts of the city via the Neubaugasse underground station, just a few metres away.

The back story

As early as the 17th century, lively parties were celebrated in this house. At that time, ‘Zum goldenen Kreuz’ was considered the trendy location in the neighbourhood. Among others, the Viennese Waltz Kings of the Strauss family resided here. From the very beginning, this house was a meeting place for creative and party-loving people—so it was only logical that the story would continue with Hotel MOTTO, but with a pinch of punk rock.

This new era begans with Bernd Schlacher. With his background in the restaurant industry, he has firmly established his MOTTO group in Vienna through his innovative redesign of traditional cuisine. Schlacher had already opened several restaurant projects since 1991, such as MOTTO am Fluss Restaurant & Café and Thell Restaurant (formerly known as MOTTO), but he became best known for his catering company. When Bernd Schlacher discovered the historic magnificent building on Mariahilfer Straße, one of the city’s most famous shopping streets, it was in need of complete renovation, but Schlacher came up with the idea of creating a small grand hotel with an airy, fresh design, emphasized by the curved staircase, while remaining intimate at the same time. The construction work took five years. While traveling, especially in Paris, Schlacher gathered design ideas that he then implemented in the Hotel MOTTO. In October 2021, the time had come: Bernd Schlacher had fulfilled his dream and opened the doors to his new hotel.

Interior & architecture

A love affair between Vienna and Paris: that’s Hotel MOTTO. Here, hard meets soft in the form of fabric-lined walls and floral patterns that contrast with graffiti-covered mirrored surfaces. The walls of the lobby and restaurant are decorated with impressive works by Andrea Ferolla, adding another playful element. Carpets and tiles form the backdrop for carefully selected vintage furniture. Oiled herringbone parquet flooring and large, soundproof French doors complete the interior. Outside, the hotel is a true example of Viennese architecture. The ornate facade with columns and statues is impressive. The proportions of the cross-vaulted dome follow the geometry of the richly decorated front façade and the façade on Schadekgasse. As a sculptural structure, the Hotel MOTTO now makes a strong statement at the intersection of this busy street.

A look inside

The playful rebellion continues in the rooms: in six of the eight Art Deluxe rooms, works of art by Amer Hadžić adorn the walls above the beds. The artist deals with contemporary themes—always with a twinkle in his eye. Provocative and amusing are also the works of Sasha Knezevic—his quotations cover the mirrored walls in eight rooms. He aims to create a contrast to the perfect harmony with its custom-made door handles, in lampshades with a retro flair, elegant bathroom tiles and Venetian mirrored walls. Some of the furniture was made by small regional manufacturers to support local artisanship. Guests sleep in Egyptian cotton sheets and sink into 550-gram towels. An original brass serving trolley provides a mini cocktail bar.

They are also invited to relax on the 7th floor, where a small oasis of recreation with complimentary snacks is waiting for them. A rain shower, a relaxation room with high-quality spring water, a unisex sauna and a small steam bath invite them to recharge their batteries. Those who prefer to unwind actively can work out in the fitness room. Whether on the bike, treadmill, weight bench, with weights or on the yoga mat—it’s easy to work up a sweat here.

Cuisine

When one of Austria’s best culinary innovators runs a hotel, it’s only to be expected that his hotel will also take guests on a culinary journey. At Chez Bernard, on the 7th floor, all dreams of a luxurious breakfast are fulfilled. Here, caffeine creations and pastry dreams are served. In addition to breakfast, guests can enjoy modern cuisine here. Well-known classics are reinterpreted. The restaurant offers plenty of space and greenery. And when the weather is nice during the summer months, guests can also enjoy drinks and service on the roof terrace on the 8th floor. Under the spectacular glass dome, the Chez Bernard restaurant is, of course, above all an experience for dinner. The dark green, round leather benches in the restaurant area and the antique-style lampshades with fringes create a cozy atmosphere, and meals are served on stylish, round marble tables. The entire restaurant is surrounded by green plants, which conjure up a relaxed atmosphere, especially in the evening. The heart and eye-catcher of the restaurant is the bar, located directly under the glass dome. When guests spend the evening here being looked after by the staff, who wear tastefully designed uniforms, they feel like they are part of a movie.

The culinary trip continues on the ground floor, where the hotel’s own bakery and pastry shop MOTTO Brot is located. Here, guests can enjoy a wide selection of French-Viennese delicacies. From April to October, these treats can also be enjoyed in the cosy outdoor area on Mariahilfer Straße.

Guests who wish to enjoy cuisine outside the hotel can visit  MOTTO am Fluss. The sister company offers breakfast through dinner directly on the Donaukanal.

What we love about it?

That Hotel MOTTO takes us straight to Paris—every detail in the hotel is tailored to the flair of the 1920s. Works by contemporary artists provide an interesting contrast. And thanks to Bernd Schlacher’s gastronomic expertise, a comfortable stay and a culinary experience are perfectly combined here.
