Holiday home
near Lake Chiemsee, Germany

Dairy cows, ponies, chickens, cats and rabbits: the old barn on the family farm embodies idyllic village life. Situated in the Bavarian foothills of the Alps, the interior of the holiday home is not what one might expect from a barn: It is a return to its roots – but with a contemporary twist.

The view

Nestled in lush green surroundings, the barn’s large windows offer views of meadows, mountains and picturesque houses in the Bavarian Alpine foothills.

The architecture

Inside, the barn is all about high ceilings and exposed beams. Warm clay plaster walls and cement floors draw the eye to wooden accents and carefully chosen furniture. With its modern design approach, the once rustic look and feel of the barn has turned into a minimalist yet cosy holiday home. The existing structures were carefully integrated in the new interior—preserving its personality by combining the past and present.

The converted hayloft on Lake Chiemsee is one of Stephanie Thatenhorst’s first private residential projects, reflecting her current design style. The conscious approach to history, materials and the connection between nature and architecture is evident, as is the interplay of tasteful minimalism and warm accents.

A look inside

Subtle colour accents and an open floor plan convey a sense of calm and spaciousness. The barn has two bedrooms, two children’s rooms and a generously sized living room including a kitchen area, offering space for family and guests. Carefully selected vintage furniture and high-quality fabrics complete the interior.

Surrounding area

Not far from the barn lies the large Lake Chiemsee and its islands. Bavaria’s largest lake offers numerous opportunities for swimming, sailing, surfing, cycling and hiking. Those who prefer the mountains can climb the Chiemgau Alps with their green pastures.

Interesting spots

Chiemsee’s islands are easy to get to by boat. While Fraueninsel is a haven for artists, fishermen, and nuns, Herreninsel is home to one of Ludwig II’s fairy-tale castles. Next to the grand building is a park that’s just as impressive.

What we love about it?

The right mix of rustic and modern. Through her work, interior designer Stephanie Thatenhorst demonstrates that even an old barn can be turned into a modern design gem.

Who is this place best suited for?

Especially for groups of friends or families – and anyone who enjoys peace, nature and style. The barn has plenty of space for chatty evenings, leisurely cooking and hikes in nature.
