Modern courtyard with a turquoise pool, surrounded by white walls and palm trees, at Casa Montelongo.

Casa
Montelongo

Hotel
La Oliva (Fuerteventura), Spain

Formed from the bones of the old theatre and casa, Spanish architect Néstor Pérez Batista designed two units divided only by a square pool. Located in the northern town of La Oliva, the house combines elegant lines with local materials and captures the warm colours typical of the Canarian climate.

The view

A sleek minimalist pool that lies between the units divides and unites both spaces at the same time. A sculpture by Óscar Latuag rises above it. The artist from Tenerife is an explorer of forms who translates the island’s rich natural heritage into abstract shapes made of lichen, prickly pear cacti and penca leaves. His ode to the island creates a play of shadow and light that changes with the rhythm of the day.

The architecture

As the sun shines upon the interior, the boundaries between inside and outside seem to fade. Clean lines dominate the building both inside and out, creating a sense of calm. Stone, wood, clay, lime and glass were used to reshape the building—formed with traditional methods and respect for the surroundings.

Once the night falls over the white walls, the house is powered solely by solar energy and the inner courtyard is illuminated with time-controlled LED lights. On rainy days, the water is collected for irrigation. All the soft furnishings are made from natural fibres by local artisans. And once the sun slowly begins to dance over the beds, breakfast baskets with local products are waiting at the door.

A look inside

The house offers a sense of soothing stillness—it invites contemplation, reflection and an experience of pure hedonism. White walls, floors and ceilings allow the individual colours to stand out as a statement, creating a space that is well curated without feeling unwelcoming. The interplay between angular and round shapes runs throughout the house—from the square pool to round archways, angular windows to round curtains over the beds.

Surrounding area

Situated in northern Fuerteventura the hotel lies in the untouched barren landscapes of the Canary Islands. Not far from the hotel rests the Volcán de la Arena, which last erupted thousands of years ago, but has left its mark on the typical landscape of the island. Apart from the lunar landscapes, Fuerteventura impresses with its white sandy beaches—a treat for the eyes and feet.

Interesting spots

White sandy beaches and crashing waves: the island is a magnet for surfers—while the summer offers gentle waves for beginners, winter is more of a challenge. Playa de Jarubio on the west coast is appreciated by surfers due to its challenging waters. The rugged cliffs of Puertito de los Molinos lie further south-west. Far to the north is the Isla de Lobos with its circular hiking trail, a car-free island that can only be reached by ferry.

What we love about it?

Serenity—both visually and acoustically. In a world that appears to be increasingly flooding our senses with impressions and information, Casa Montelongo seems like a sanctuary for our senses.

Who is this place best suited for?

It is a haven for adults seeking a slower rhythm of life and a certain seclusion away from the world’s hectic pace. At Casa Montelongo, guests can immerse themselves in the lunar beauty of the island’s surreal landscape.
