Kovačević-Vidović

Ceramicist
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

In the heart of Sarajevo, Tatjana Kovačević-Vidović breathes life into clay, carrying forward a tradition that was close to fading. Her ceramics at TAKO Studio merge the patience of heritage craft with the clarity of contemporary design, resulting in pieces that feel both timeless and deeply personal. Earthy, black and white colours, combined with harmonious, classic designs, characterise her works.

Beyond her collections, Kovačević-Vidović opens her studio to the community, leading workshops where clay becomes a tool for meditation, connection, and storytelling—reminding people of the quiet power held in their own hands. In this way, she ensures that pottery is not only preserved, but reimagined as a living, shared practice for the future.

Which place do you currently call home and where do you work on your projects?

Sarajevo is both my hometown and my workplace. It is a city where every corner is filled with history and character. I am the founder and creative director of Tako Pottery Studio, where I can channel my creativity into crafting ceramic pieces that add a touch of artistry to everyday life.

Do you have a favorite place in your area where you like to relax and linger?

Whenever I need to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, I find solace in the serene beauty of Ravna Vala rainforest on Igman mountain. The tranquil walking trails and the calming sounds of nature offer the perfect antidote to stress. If you head there early enough, you might just have the whole place to yourself, which is pure bliss.

Are there any urgent political issues or problems in your region?

The political landscape here is complex and riddled with challenges. From population decline to pervasive corruption, economic instability, environmental degradation, and enduring ethnic tensions, there’s no shortage of issues that demand attention and resolution.

In your opinion, what has developed well in the last 5 years—and what has not?

Over the past half-decade, I’ve noticed some positive changes taking root. There’s a growing awareness of the importance of health and well-being, with more people embracing healthier lifestyles. However, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the rapid urbanization and the emergence of soulless housing projects that prioritize profit over community and livability.

Do you know a hidden gem when it comes to local manufacturers—whether it’s arts and crafts, sustainable products or food?

Absolutely! Remzija Balagić, the last brush maker from Sarajevo, is a true artisan who’s keeping the tradition of brush-making alive. His workshop in Baščaršija is a treasure trove of high-quality brushes, each one a testament to craftsmanship and heritage. It’s not just about buying a brush; it’s about experiencing a piece of history and tradition.

Is there anything particularly innovative in your region? Also in comparison to other places you have already visited?

Innovation comes in many forms, and here in Sarajevo, it’s often about finding creative solutions to everyday challenges. Whether it’s small businesses adapting to changing times or community initiatives addressing social issues, there’s a spirit of resilience and ingenuity that’s truly inspiring.

Do you have a secret restaurant tip that you would like to share with us?

Bistro Zdravo is a hidden gem that’s been gaining popularity among locals. It’s not your typical restaurant; it’s a vegan hybrid spot that offers a unique blend of food, drinks, and even workshops and lectures. It’s a refreshing change from the usual dining experience, and the food is absolutely delicious.

Is there a local shop whose products are only available in your region?

Molimao, Revolt, Kutcha, and Stich 22 are all local design and concept shops that showcase the creativity and talent of Sarajevo’s artisans and designers. From handmade crafts to unique fashion pieces, these stores offer a curated selection of treasures that you won’t find anywhere else.

What are your 3 favourite apps that you use every day and couldn’t live without?

My daily essentials include Kindle for diving into a good book, YouTube for entertainment and learning, and Instagram mainly for my studio work.

Do you have any favourite newspapers or online magazines? And how do you keep up to date with politics or social and cultural issues?

I rely on sources like Klix for news updates and Bonjoure magazine for insightful lifestyle and cultural reads. They strike a good balance between keeping me informed and not overwhelming me with heavy stuff.

Imagine you could be mayor for a year—what would you change?

If I had the chance to lead as mayor, my first priority would be to increase green spaces throughout the city. We need more parks and trees to counterbalance the concrete jungle and provide havens of nature amidst urban life.

One last question: If you could choose another place to live—regardless of financial or time constrains—which one would you choose?

Portugal has always held a special allure for me. The laid-back lifestyle, stunning landscapes, and rich culture make it a dream destination where I could see myself.
