Michal
Melicherčík

Blacksmith
Hriňová, Slovakia

At the age of 7, Melicherčík carved his first knife out of wood. Years later, his passion inspired him to give up his conventional career and devote himself entirely to his craft. His first international commission, a shepherd’s knife that was shipped all the way to California, marked the worldwide recognition of his craftsmanship and remained unforgettable to him. Melicherčík’s metalwork draws on traditional Slovakian forms and patterns resulting in designs that are both folkloric and modern.

Which place do you currently call home and where do you work on your projects?

I live in the middle of Slovakia in the small town of Hriňová in the Podpolanie region. Hriňová is a mountainous area surrounded by forests and nature. I reside in a secluded house where I have a workshop and pursue my artistic craft.

Do you have a favourite place in your area where you like to relax and linger?

In my area, there are countless opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. In the local volcanic mountain range called Poľana, there are many protected natural landmarks, as well as opportunities for rock climbing. Additionally, I enjoy going out with friends to the nearby town for a movie or good food.

Are there any urgent political issues or problems in your region?

The political situation in our country is not good at the moment. The newly elected ruling party led by Robert Fico is pro-Russian. Given the events in neighbouring Ukraine, this is very worrying. I cannot understand how the mafia could come back to power after the murder of journalist Ján Kuciak and in view of the massive corruption. That worries me.

In your opinion, what has developed well in the last 5 years—and what has not?

After the murder of journalist Ján Kuciak and subsequent anti-corruption protests, it seemed that things would start moving in the right direction. However, currently, it doesn’t look good.

Do you know a hidden gem when it comes to local manufacturers—whether it’s arts and crafts, sustainable products or food?

In my vicinity, there are many craftsmen specializing in traditional crafts. For instance, I’ll mention Juraj Dufek, a producer of traditional Slovak bagpipes (gájd), and Robert Môc, a manufacturer of swords and cold weapons. As for myself, I’m dedicated to crafting traditional shepherd knives.

The character of our region is also influenced by traditional agriculture. Although domestic farming is on the decline, a handful of individuals still engage in it. I’d like to mention my friend Jozef Kučera, who maintains a sustainable farm, raises sheep, and produces traditional goods and cheese.

Is there anything particulary innovative in your region? Also in comparison to other places you have already visited?

Hriňovské Lazy is a unique landscape influenced by traditional agriculture and shaped by cultivating the land into terraced fields. They cover an unusually large area of several square kilometers in our region and create beautiful panoramas every season.

It’s also part of the Poľana Biosphere Reserve. When you visit this enchanting countryside, you can immerse yourself in the traditions and customs associated with the annual cycle, such as Bethlehem processions, Shrovetide parades, Easter traditions, Maypole raising, Turica bonfires, and harvest festivals. You’ll also encounter picturesque wooden cottages, intricately carved wooden roadside crosses, and chapels perched on elevated spots with stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Do you have any favourite newspapers or online magazines? And how do you keep up to date with politics or social and cultural issues?

I strive to search for reliable sources, especially on the internet. I avoid disinformation. In Slovakia, the main sources are the SME newspaperHospodárske noviny, and Aktuality.sk.

Imagine you could be mayor for a year—what would you change?

Sorry, I really dont know. I’m not familiar with the mayors competencies. Maybe I would support small businesses and farmers more.

One last question: If you could choose another place to live—regardless of financial or time constrains—which one would you choose?
