Luca
Peppoloni

Master metalworker
Spello, Italy

‘Rust is the memory of iron’: a phrase that sums up Peppoloni’s work well. By incorporating Etruscan elements such as Giacometti, his works express memory and resemble archaeological finds. Peppoloni creates objects that satisfy the senses—exclusive pieces that stand the test of time. Through his work, he preserves ancient traditions that were already dear to his ancestors.

Which place do you currently call home and where do you work on your projects?

I live and work in Spello, a village in Umbria on the slopes of Mount Subasio.

Do you have a favourite place in your area where you like to relax and linger?

I like to go to Mount Subasio, but there are many places to relax and to be alone for a while.

Are there any urgent political issues or problems in your region?

Umbria is a beautiful place to live but with few connections and job opportunities.

In your opinion, what has developed well in the last 5 years—and what has not?

After Covid, many tourists returned, perhaps too many. Our countries are small and cannot accommodate so many people well.

Do you know a hidden gem when it comes to local manufacturers—whether it’s arts and crafts, sustainable products or food?

Buccilli’s mill is a magical place, an old watermill that produces a flour from which bread and other delicious products are made.

Is there anything particulary innovative in your region? Also in comparison to other places you have already visited?

I believe that Umbria should conserve and enhance the nature and history of the countries, rather than trying to innovate. The best innovation is the rediscovery of the region’s historical and natural treasures, in my opinion.

Do you have a secret restaurant tip that you would like to share with us?

Yes, La cantina in Spello.

Is there a local shop whose products are only available in your region?

There’s the Museo Atelier Giuditta Brozzetti in Perugia.

What are your 3 favourite apps that you use every day and couldn’t live without?

WhatsApp

Instagram

Google Traslate

Do you have any favourite newspapers or online magazines? And how do you keep up to date with politics or social and cultural issues?

I follow different pages online, for example Internazionale, to look for different opinions on the same topic.

Imagine you could be mayor for a year—what would you change?

I would put culture first and do initiatives to promote the art and history of the country.

One last question: If you could choose another place to live—regardless of financial or time constrains—which one would you choose?

I think Umbria is a beautiful place to live and I am happy to live here. To confirm this I can say that many foreigners have chosen to live in Spello and have bought houses here.
