Ena Mulavdic & Ebrahim Mohammadian

Jewellery makers
Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina

A duo that is not only culturally diverse, but also brings a variety of skills to the table: Mulavdic is a Bosnian designer with a strong business background, while Mohammadian is an Iranian sculptor and painter. In their works, they merge their contrasts into unique pieces of jewellery that tell their own stories. So rich in details and materials – even on such a small scale. No wonder that each piece is unique.

The entire spectrum of life is at the centre of their work. Ranging from birth to the feelings that life has in store for us (such as love, hate, joy, sadness, anticipation and unhappiness) to mortality. Mulavdic and Mohammadian oversee every step of the process: from the initial design to modeling, casting, carving, miniature oil paintings, sculptures, intaglios, stone settings, enameling and post-production – paying attention to every detail.

Which place do you currently call home and where do you work on your projects?

Sarajevo, a city where ancient history and modern life collide, pulses with captivating energy. Our studio, nestled at the heart of the Old Town, sits at the intersection of Bascarsija and Ferhadija streets, where Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian architecture blend seamlessly. This vibrant mix, coupled with the presence of sacred sites representing the three Abrahamic religions, creates a unique cultural tapestry. Here, we find ourselves drawn to the simple pleasures of savoring coffee with a view, soaking in the irresistible charm of Sarajevo’s offerings.

Do you have a favourite place in your area where you like to relax and linger?

We are really lucky  to live in a city surrounded by majestic mountains and breathtaking nature. Just minutes away, you can find untamed wilderness with bears, wolves, and wild boars. For a rejuvenating walk, head to Barice or Cavljak, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city. For adventure, explore the Olympic mountains of Bjelasnica, Jahorina, Trebevic, and Igman, perfect for hiking and winter sports. Take a ride on the cable car from Sarajevo to Trebevic for unparalleled views of the Sarajevo valley. For cyclists, the flat western part of the city is ideal, with a trip to Vrelo Bosne, the spring of the Bosna River, being a top pick. Whether you seek tranquility or adventure, Sarajevo’s natural wonders never disappoint.

Are there any urgent political issues or problems in your region?

Bosnia and Herzegovina grapples with one of the most intricate state structures, born from years of devastating agression (1992 – 1995) following the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Unfortunately, political divisions run deep, with the country split into the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Srpska, and the District of Brcko — all within the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This fragmentation is made worse by politicians who exploit ethnic differences, despite the nation’s rich history of multiculturalism and diversity. Such divisions hinder effective governance, allowing politicians to shirk their responsibilities and prioritize personal agendas over the welfare of citizens. While there are exceptions, dissenting voices struggle to be heard amidst the clamor of mainstream politics. This dysfunctionality poses significant obstacles to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s aspirations of EU and NATO membership, complicating even the most basic governmental tasks. In essence, the country’s political quagmire stifles progress and unity, perpetuating a cycle of stagnation and frustration.

In your opinion, what has developed well in the last 5 years – and what has not?

Despite the challenges mentioned earlier, Bosnia and Herzegovina has seen remarkable progress over the past five years, thanks to the efforts of countless dedicated individuals. These hardworking people embody the resilience and spirit of our nation, ensuring that our country continues to shine with its unique charm and vitality. Many Bosnian companies and artisans have flourished, successfully competing on the global stage in industries such as furniture design. The post-war generation of furniture designers has made significant breakthroughs, earning prestigious awards like the Red Dot Prize. Keep an eye out for brands like Gazzda, Goes, Zanat, and Artisan if you’re looking to elevate your space. Moreover, Bosnia’s cultural scene remains vibrant, with our cinema, literature, and sports making waves internationally. Athletes like Lana Pudar are achieving remarkable success on the world stage. However, despite these achievements, structural and governmental support remains lacking. Without unified decisions and concerted efforts from our politicians, these valuable accomplishments often go unnoticed. It’s clear that while Bosnia and Herzegovina boasts immense talent and potential, systemic challenges continue to hinder our progress.

Apple Books

Do you have any favourite newspapers or online magazines? And how do you keep up to date with politics or social and cultural issues?

As jewellery designers, we draw inspiration from a diverse range of sources, including specialized magazines that focus on our craft. Among our favorites are JCK Magazine, Professional Jeweller, National Jeweler, and Rapaport Magazine. These publications offer valuable insights into industry trends, emerging designers, and innovative techniques, helping us stay at the forefront of our field. In addition to print media, we also utilize digital platforms like Pinterest and Instagram to explore global art and design movements. Moreover, as Ena is a student at the Gemological Institute of America and Ebrahim has a passion for gemstone cutting and artistic work with gemstones, we also enjoy immersing ourselves in gemology magazines such as Gems & Gemology, InColor, and the Journal of Gemology. These publications deepen our understanding of gemstones and inform our design process.

Imagine you could be mayor for a year – what would you change?

As mayor, our top priority would be to enhance the education, cleanliness and livability of our city, ensuring it revolves around the needs and well-being of its residents. This encompasses not only physical cleanliness but also implementing policies and initiatives that prioritize human-centric approaches in urban planning, transportation, social services, and community engagement. By fostering a cleaner and more people-centered environment, we can create a city that is healthier, more vibrant, and more inclusive for everyone.

One last question: If you could choose another place to live – regardless of financial or time constrains – which one would you choose?

While every corner of the world holds its unique allure, if I were to choose without constraints, our heart would gravitate towards Venice’s mystic canals, Edinburgh’s rich history, the serene landscapes of Norway, or the tranquil embrace of mountainous retreats. Each offers a distinct blend of beauty and serenity that resonates deeply with us.
